About Eleuthera and the Governor's Harbour area
Buttonwood Reserve is an easy 15-minute drive from governors Harbour, the main town on the island. Governors Harbour has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbor. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fisherman at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, and a medical clinic. Friday night fish fry in Governors Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together tourists and locals for authentic Bahamian food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.
Just a mile north of Buttonwood Reserve is the village of James Cistern, which has a good grocery store, a town dock where the fisherman bring their catch every day, a produce stand, and two small local restaurants, Kel-d’s and Lee’s Café. James Cistern is also the home of Stubb’s famous barbecue, every Friday and Saturday.
Buttonwood Reserve is less than 10 minutes from the boutique luxury resort Sky Beach club, which has an excellent beachfront restaurant and infinity pool, with swim up cocktail bar and poolside service all day long. Other restaurants in the area include Tippy’s (international and fusion), the Beach House (tapas), the Rainbow Inn (famous for its steaks and pizza night), Da Perk (café and sandwich shop) and the Sunset Inn (authentic Bahamian fare). The above all have live music one or more nights a week, so there is live entertainment somewhere nearby almost every night.
Eleuthera is most famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted pink sand beaches. The island is home to 8000 welcoming residents. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. You can rent power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks and bikes in Governor's Harbour. You can have a charter captain take you out for excursions of various types, including bone fishing, shelling and nature tours. Buttonwood Reserve's caretaker, Patrick, also offers fishing charters for our guests. There is excellent sightseeing as well, including caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small settlements to explore. We hope you will enjoy Buttonwood Reserve and everything that Eleuthera has to offer.
